With political alignments beginning to take shape ahead of the 2027 general election, former Minister of State for Education and ex-member of the House of Representatives, Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba, has declared his intention to contest the presidency under the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Nwajiuba made his ambition known through a statement issued by his office on Monday, in which he said Nigeria’s present social and economic challenges demand leadership anchored on clearly defined policies, negotiation capacity and a functional grassroots political structure, rather than political rhetoric.
According to the statement, his experience across the legislative and executive arms of government, as well as service in key national institutions, has provided him with what it described as a broad understanding of governance, public finance and policy implementation.
The former minister is expected to centre his campaign on education reform, economic stabilisation and efforts to restore public confidence in government institutions, the statement added.
Nwajiuba, a lawyer called to the Nigerian Bar in 1989 and a former Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), said his presidential bid is guided by what he termed a “competence-first” approach to leadership, placing emphasis on experience, policy depth and institutional knowledge.
