Political tension has resurfaced in Rivers State following a fresh move by the House of Assembly to commence impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
The development emerged on Thursday after lawmakers reconvened plenary earlier than the January 26 resumption date earlier announced by the Assembly. During the sitting, the Majority Leader, Major Jack, formally presented allegations of gross misconduct against the governor.
The notice, which was signed by 26 members of the House, was read on the floor of the Assembly, marking the second time lawmakers have initiated impeachment steps against Governor Fubara since he assumed office.
Speaker of the House, Martins Amaewhule, said the Assembly would, in line with constitutional provisions, serve the notice of gross misconduct on the governor within seven days, signalling the commencement of the impeachment process.
