Keyamo Orders Hybrid Payment System at Airport Access Gates

The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo SAN has directed the introduction of a hybrid payment system at airport access gates across the country following the earlier suspension of the fully cashless payment arrangement.

This was disclosed in a statement by the Special Adviser on Media and Communications to the Minister, Tunde Moshood, on Tuesday.

The directive comes after the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, , ordered the suspension of the full cashless access gate payment system due to the traffic gridlock it created at airport entrances.

The Minister issued the directive on Tuesday in Abuja after a meeting with officials of the (FAAN) and senior officials of the Ministry to review the initial implementation of the policy and the operational challenges encountered.

According to the Minister, the Ministry has resolved to engage concessionaires to introduce a fully automated electronic payment system at all airport access gates, with the long-term goal of eliminating cash payments.

In the interim, a hybrid payment system that accommodates both cash and card payments will resume at all airport access gates nationwide with effect from Friday, March 13, 2026.

Motorists who already possess the FAAN Go Cashless Cards have been advised to continue using them until further notice, while other electronic payment options, including Point of Sale (POS) terminals and other approved digital channels, will also remain available.

The Ministry also encouraged members of the public and road users to obtain and use the FAAN Go Cashless Card as the Authority continues efforts to enhance and fully optimise the cashless payment system.

The directive effectively restores the previous access gate payment arrangement while the Ministry works towards implementing a fully automated electronic system at the nation’s airports.
