GLOBAL OIL MARKET REALITIES: SETTING THE RECORD STRAIGHT ON FUEL PRICE INCREASE
Our attention has been drawn to misleading narratives and coordinated propaganda attempting to blame the Federal Government for the recent increase in fuel pump prices in Nigeria. These claims are inaccurate and deliberately ignore the global realities currently shaping the international oil market.
The recent increase in crude oil prices is largely influenced by escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East involving Iran and the United States. Conflicts of this nature disrupt global oil supply chains and naturally lead to increases in crude oil prices across the world.
As crude oil prices rise globally, petroleum product prices are also affected in many countries. Nigeria, like other nations, is not insulated from these global market dynamics.
It is therefore misleading and politically motivated to attribute the current increase in pump prices solely to the policies of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Despite these global pressures, the reforms introduced by the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu are positioning Nigeria to better withstand economic shocks and build a more sustainable energy sector. Without these reforms and the ongoing efforts to strengthen domestic refining capacity, Nigeria could have been facing severe fuel scarcity, long queues at filling stations, and significantly higher pump prices nationwide.
While the global rise in crude oil prices presents short-term challenges, it may also lead to increased revenue inflow for the country, which could translate into improved fiscal capacity and higher allocations to states for development.
