A late-night assault on a National Park Service facility in Orire Local Government Area of Oyo State has left at least four personnel dead, heightening security concerns in surrounding communities.
The attack occurred at about 9:00 p.m. on Tuesday in Oloka, where armed men reportedly breached the National Park Service office and opened fire on officers stationed at the facility. The assailants were said to have entered the area without detection and carried out the operation swiftly, leaving several personnel injured in addition to the reported fatalities.
Residents of nearby communities described scenes of panic following the incident, saying the nature of the attack has raised fears of possible further violence in the area.
The Oyo State Police Command confirmed the incident, with its Public Relations Officer, DSP Olayinka Ayanlade, stating that officers of the National Park Service were attacked by unidentified gunmen.
He said the Commissioner of Police, Femi Haruna, alongside other security chiefs, was heading to the scene, adding that tactical units, operatives of the Mobile Police Force and the Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit have been deployed to the area.
Security has since been reinforced in Oloka and adjoining communities, while investigations into the circumstances surrounding the attack are ongoing.
