Film Set Turns Violent as Actress Bimbo Recounts Midnight Attack During Lagos Shoot

What began as routine location filming for a Lagos-based movie production reportedly spiralled into a terrifying night of violence, after suspected hoodlums stormed a hotel where members of the cast of “Omo Ghetto” were lodged, allegedly in search of filmmaker and lead actress, Funke Akindele.

Recounting the incident during an interview programme, With Chide, actress Bimbo revealed that the attack followed growing hostility around the filming environment, where the movie’s depiction of street life had drawn resentment from some youths in the area. She said the situation persisted despite security measures put in place by the production team.

According to her account, the crew had retired for the night when shouting and loud banging erupted close to midnight. Moments later, cries of “Ole” echoed around the hotel as intruders attempted to force their way inside, sending the occupants into panic.

Bimbo said it quickly became apparent that Akindele was the primary target. In an effort to protect her, the actresses attempted to conceal her within the room, but the attackers eventually gained entry. She recalled that the men repeatedly called Akindele by name before dragging her downstairs to her vehicle.

She alleged that the attackers, some of whom were armed, compelled Akindele to sing and dance, while others remained stationed outside the hotel, effectively surrounding the building and leaving those inside defenceless.

The situation only de-escalated after security agencies were alerted. Gunshots were fired on arrival, prompting the assailants to flee the scene.

Bimbo described the episode as deeply traumatising, saying the cast narrowly escaped a far worse outcome.

“It was a close brush with death,” she said, adding that the experience left lasting emotional scars on everyone involved and reaffirmed their gratitude for survival.
