Cult Violence Hit Benue Communities With Fatal Attacks

A wave of coordinated violence linked to rival cult groups has left at least eight people dead across several towns in Benue State, with security sources indicating that the incidents are connected to a struggle for territorial control.

The attacks, which occurred over several days, were reported in Otukpo and Gboko before extending to Makurdi, the state capital, and Jato Aka in Kwande Local Government Area. One person was killed in Otukpo, while two deaths were recorded in Gboko, according to sources familiar with the incidents.

On Wednesday, the violence escalated in Makurdi, where three people were killed in separate locations within the Wurukum area. Two additional fatalities were reported in Jato Aka, Kwande LGA, as the clashes spread beyond the earlier flashpoints.

An eyewitness in Makurdi said the attacks occurred shortly after midnight, with the victims shot at close range during separate incidents. He identified those killed as Aondoaseer Yisa, also known as “Poka,” who was shot on Usman Street; Martins Dagba, known as “Wonder,” who was killed near Solace Hotels; and a young man known as “Mr Hundred,” who was shot opposite the Wurukum Mosque.

The witness said the attackers fled immediately after the shootings and added that the incidents were linked to earlier confrontations reported in Gboko and Otukpo.

Following the killings, the Chairman of Makurdi Local Government Area, Joseph Keffi, addressed residents of the affected communities through his Special Adviser on Security and Political Matters, Mark Terhide. In a statement issued by his media aide, Nathaniel Mayorofmbawa, the council chairman acknowledged the incidents and extended condolences to the families of the victims.

Mr Keffi said the local government was engaging security agencies and other stakeholders to strengthen security measures within the council area and prevent further violence.
