The family of acclaimed Nigerian writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie has announced the death of one of her twin sons, Nkanu Nnamdi, who passed away at the age of 21 months following a brief illness.
In a statement issued on Wednesday by family representative Omawumi Ogbe, the death was confirmed to have occurred on January 7, 2026. The statement described the loss as devastating for Ms Adichie and her husband, Dr Ivara Esege.
“We’re deeply saddened to confirm the passing of one of Ms Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and Dr Ivara Esege’s twin boys, Nkanu Nnamdi, who passed on Wednesday, 7 January 2026, after a brief illness,” the statement said.
The family appealed for privacy as they mourn, requesting understanding from the public and the media during what was described as an intensely difficult period.
According to the statement, no further information will be released, and the family expressed appreciation for the goodwill, prayers and respect for their need to grieve away from public attention.
