Robert Carradine Dies at 71, Family Confirms

Robert Carradine, the American actor recognised for his role in Revenge of the Nerds, has died at the age of 71, according to a statement issued by his family.

The announcement was made public through his brother, Keith Carradine, who disclosed that the actor had struggled with bipolar disorder for nearly two decades. The family said he died by suicide.

In a statement shared with media outlets, relatives described Carradine as a central figure in their family and reflected on his long-standing health challenges. They expressed the hope that his experience would contribute to wider conversations about mental illness.

“It is with profound sadness that we must share that our beloved father, grandfather, uncle, and brother Robert Carradine has passed away,” the statement read. “In a world that can feel so dark, Bobby was always a beacon of light to everyone around him.”

The family also referred to what they described as his lengthy battle with bipolar disorder and requested privacy as they mourn. “We are bereft at the loss of this beautiful soul and want to acknowledge Bobby’s valiant struggle against his nearly two-decade battle with Bipolar Disorder,” the statement continued. “At this time we ask for the privacy to grieve this unfathomable loss. With gratitude for your understanding and compassion.”

Keith Carradine said his brother was “profoundly gifted, funny, wise, and accepting”, adding that the family would remember him for his personality and outlook. He stated that there should be no shame associated with mental illness and described it as an illness that overtook him.

Robert Carradine was the youngest son of the late American actor John Carradine. He was the brother of actors David and Keith Carradine, and Christopher Carradine, a former vice president of Walt Disney Imagineering.

If you or someone you know is struggling, support is available through local health services or mental health organisations in your area.
