Political alignments in Kano State are set to shift again on Monday as Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf prepares to formally rejoin the All Progressives Congress (APC), bringing with him a broad cross-section of elected officials across the state.
The move was confirmed on Sunday in a statement issued by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, days after Yusuf announced his resignation from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).
According to the statement, Yusuf’s decision marks a return to a party he first joined in 2014, when he emerged as the APC’s candidate for the Kano Central Senatorial District. He later stepped down from that race in favour of the party’s then leader in the state, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.
The spokesperson said the governor’s latest decision followed what were described as years of political engagement on different platforms, including his recent association with the NNPP. It added that considerations around governance, national cohesion and development played a central role in Yusuf’s return to the ruling party.
Yusuf was quoted as saying that rejoining the APC would improve collaboration with the Federal Government, speed up infrastructure development, strengthen security coordination and enhance service delivery across Kano State.
He also expressed confidence that the move would contribute to greater political stability and unity within the state.
The statement disclosed that the governor would formally register as an APC member in Kano on Monday alongside 22 members of the Kano State House of Assembly, eight members of the House of Representatives and all 44 local government chairmen in the state.
The event is also expected to feature the official launch of the APC’s electronic registration exercise in Kano.
