Marrakech will host a high-stakes Africa Cup of Nations quarter-final on Saturday as Senegalese referee Issa Sy is set to oversee the clash between Nigeria and Algeria. The appointment comes after CAF reversed its earlier decision to assign Omar Artan, amid concerns over refereeing controversies at the tournament.
Sy, who previously served as Video Assistant Referee during Morocco’s group-stage match against Tanzania, brings prior AFCON experience to the fixture. Both teams enter the quarter-final with contrasting victories: Nigeria delivered a 4-0 win over Mozambique, while Algeria overcame DR Congo 1-0 after extra time.
The match revisits a recent chapter in AFCON history, echoing the 2019 semi-final when Algeria secured a 2-1 win over Nigeria courtesy of a late Riyad Mahrez free-kick. Kick-off is scheduled for 5pm Nigerian time.
