BREAKING: Nasarawa North Senator, Godiya Akwashiki Dies in India at 52

The political landscape of Nasarawa State has been thrown into deep mourning following the passing of Senator Godiya Akwashiki, the lawmaker representing Nasarawa North Senatorial District at the National Assembly.

Akwashiki, a chieftain of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), reportedly succumbed to the cold hands of death on Wednesday, December 31, 2025, at the age of 52.

A family source, who confirmed the sad development to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), disclosed that the lawmaker died in a hospital in India where he had been undergoing treatment for a protracted illness.

The demise of the ranking senator on New Year’s Eve has been described as a monumental loss to the state and the nation.

Speaking on the tragedy, the family source lamented the exit of the politician, extolling his “purposeful leadership” and the massive impact of his tenure on the zone.

“Senator Akwashiki was the best Senator Nasarawa North has ever produced due to his purposeful leadership. His projects are visible across the constituency, and he remains the only senator from the zone to win a second term,” the source stated.

A Life of Service

Born on August 3, 1973, in Angba Iggah, Nassarawa Eggon Local Government Area, the late lawmaker was a formidable force in Nasarawa politics.

Before his elevation to the Red Chamber in 2019, Akwashiki had a robust legislative career at the state level, serving as both Majority Leader and Deputy Speaker of the Nasarawa State House of Assembly.

His death creates a significant vacuum in the Nasarawa North political circuit, where he was widely recognized for his empowerment schemes and grassroots development initiatives.
