UK and German Defence Officials Visit North-East Command

Senior defence representatives from the United Kingdom and Germany have held talks with Nigerian military commanders in Maiduguri, underscoring ongoing bilateral cooperation on counter-insurgency operations in the North East.

The visit took place at the headquarters of the Joint Task Force (North East), Operation HADIN KAI, where the Defence Attaché of the United Kingdom, Brigadier General Tom Harper, and his German counterpart, Colonel Boris Bovecamp, met with senior officers overseeing military operations in the region.

According to a statement issued by Lieutenant Colonel Sani Uba, Media Information Officer for Operation HADIN KAI, the discussions centred on sustained collaboration in efforts to address terrorism and insurgency. The engagement marked a formal visit by both attachés to the Theatre Command in Maiduguri.

Brigadier General Harper referenced the longstanding defence relationship between Nigeria and the United Kingdom, noting areas of cooperation grounded in shared institutional frameworks. He also indicated that support from the British side would continue through training programmes delivered by the British Military Advisory and Training Team.

Colonel Bovecamp stated that his visit provided an opportunity to assess prospects for expanded cooperation, particularly in capacity building and coordination through regional security mechanisms. He identified operational effectiveness and collaborative responses to insurgent threats as areas of focus.

The Theatre Commander of Operation HADIN KAI, Major General Abdulsalam Abubakar, outlined the role of existing training initiatives in strengthening troop preparedness. He also identified technical expertise, equipment and logistics as potential areas for continued engagement between Nigeria and its international partners.
