Osimhen Plays Down Chase for Yekini’s Goal Record After Super Eagles’ Win Over Uganda

Super Eagles striker, Victor Osimhen, has said he is not currently focused on equalling or surpassing the late Rashidi Yekini’s goal record for the national team, insisting that his priority remains Nigeria’s collective success.

Osimhen stated this on Tuesday after captaining the Super Eagles to a 3–1 victory over Uganda in an Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) group stage encounter.

The Galatasaray forward, who has scored 32 goals for Nigeria, is five goals short of Yekini’s long-standing record of 37 goals, which remains the highest by any Nigerian international.

Speaking during his post-match interview, the 27-year-old described the opportunity to lead the team as a source of pride, while downplaying any personal ambition to break records at the tournament.

“The captaincy today gave me a strong sense of belonging. I’m not thinking about equalling or surpassing Rashidi Yekini’s record for now; it’s all about the team,” Osimhen said.

He added that his focus is on contributing to the team through goals and assists, expressing confidence that the record could be matched in the future.

“I am trying to fight for my team to get goals and assists. Hopefully, not at this AFCON and maybe not during the qualifiers, but one day I know I am going to get there,” he said.

Rashidi Yekini, who remains Nigeria’s all-time leading goalscorer, is widely regarded as one of the country’s greatest footballers.
