President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the immediate dissolution of the Presidential Implementation Committee (PIC) on the Alienation of Federal Government Properties, bringing an end to a body established more than two decades ago to oversee the disposal of federal assets.
The development was announced in a statement issued on Thursday by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
According to the statement, all matters previously handled by the committee will now be coordinated by the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi.
The Presidential Implementation Committee was established in 2000 during the administration of former President Olusegun Obasanjo to supervise the privatisation, sale and lease of Federal Government landed properties under the government’s monetisation policy.
The committee was chaired by the then Minister of Housing and included representatives from the Ministries of Transportation, Justice, Health and Agriculture, as well as the Nigeria Police Force. Professor P.T. Ahire, who was then a Deputy Director in the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, served as its pioneer Secretary, while additional members were drawn from both the public and private sectors.
The Presidency recalled that on March 22, 2001, the Federal Executive Council approved the establishment of a Panel of Inquiry to produce a White Paper to guide the implementation of its recommendations. The panel reportedly spent 21 months carrying out its assignment before submitting its report.
The statement explained that the Federal Government determined that the committee’s activities had expanded beyond its original mandate, resulting in multiple litigations across the country. It added that the continued existence of the committee was no longer considered necessary.
Consequently, President Tinubu directed that the committee be dissolved, with the Attorney General of the Federation assuming responsibility for coordinating all matters relating to its activities with effect from November 5, 2025.
The Presidency also directed the former Secretary of the committee, B.S. Dutsin-Ma, to immediately cease acting on behalf of the dissolved committee and the Federal Government on matters relating to its former responsibilities.
