Joshua Speaks on Loss After Lagos Crash That Killed Two Friends

Days after a fatal road accident on the Lagos–Ibadan Motorway, former world heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua has spoken publicly about the deaths of two close friends who were killed in the crash he survived.

Joshua recounted the incident during a private conversation with former UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman, a discussion later shared in a YouTube video posted by Usman. The exchange took place as Joshua was receiving medical care for injuries sustained in the accident and shortly before a mixed martial arts event held in Lagos on December 30.

The crash occurred on December 29 and involved a black Lexus vehicle in which Joshua was travelling with Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele. Both men died at the scene, while Joshua was rescued from the wreckage and taken to Duchess International Hospital, where he received treatment for head and upper-body injuries.

In the video, Joshua is seen inside a treatment room with visible bandages, explaining that the impact of the loss had not yet fully registered. He told Usman that one of the victims had been seated in the front of the vehicle while the other was seated behind him on the right-hand side.

Usman expressed sympathy during the conversation, while Joshua reflected briefly on the fragility of life as he continued his recovery.

Joshua has since been discharged from hospital and has returned to the United Kingdom.

On Sunday, he addressed the tragedy publicly for the first time, sharing a photograph on his social media platforms showing him with members of the victims’ families. The image, captioned “My Brother’s Keeper,” showed the boxer standing alongside the bereaved relatives in a gesture of support.
