Controversial Nigerian social media activist Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), has publicly endorsed former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello for the Kogi Central Senatorial seat in the 2027 elections, while launching a scathing and sexist attack on incumbent Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.
In a post shared on Tuesday, VDM wrote, “In light of what had happened in the past, the controversy, the accusations by the efcc and some nigerians I see a true leader that has worked on his flaws and over time became a better man, everybody deserves a second chance,YOU yahaya adoza bello deserves a second chance to show Nigerians the good in you and that is why I am standing firmly with you as you contest for the KOGI CENTRAL SENATE SEAT against Natasha akpoti uduaghan who doesn’t have the experience and qualifications of a leader,we have all seen how sentimental she is,a woman like her should be at home taking care of the kids and cooking for her husband…..GOD BLESS YAHAYA BELLO….INCOMING 2027 SAI YAHAYA BELLO,SAI 2027 ❤️”
The endorsement comes amid Bello’s ongoing legal battles with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission over allegations of money laundering and misappropriation of state funds during his tenure as governor from 2016 to 2024. VDM, however, framed Bello as a reformed leader deserving redemption, dismissing past controversies as opportunities for growth.
VDM, a 31-year-old influencer from Benue State, rose to fame through viral videos exposing corruption, celebrity scandals, and social injustices. Often self-described as an “online police” rather than a traditional activist, he has amassed millions of followers across platforms like Instagram and TikTok. His unfiltered commentary has led to multiple arrests, including a 2025 detention by the Nigeria Police Force for alleged cyberbullying, and ongoing lawsuits from figures he’s targeted. Despite this, VDM positions himself as a voice for accountability, blending philanthropy with provocative critiques.
The post’s derogatory remarks against Akpoti-Uduaghan, suggesting she belongs at home in domestic roles, have ignited widespread backlash online. Critics labeled the comments misogynistic, with women’s rights groups condemning them as reinforcing gender stereotypes in Nigerian politics. Akpoti-Uduaghan, a lawyer and entrepreneur elected in 2023, has been vocal on issues like gender equality and environmental advocacy, often clashing with Bello during his governorship.
Political analysts suggest VDM’s support for Bello could stem from regional affiliations or shared anti-establishment sentiments, but it risks alienating his largely youthful audience amid Nigeria’s push for progressive leadership. Neither Bello nor Akpoti-Uduaghan has responded publicly to the post by press time.
As 2027 elections approach, the endorsement underscores deepening divisions in Kogi politics, where ethnic and power dynamics often dominate.
VDM’s influence, while polarizing, highlights social media’s growing role in shaping electoral narratives, even though some of his followers believe the post is sarcasm.
